Do you only adjust the upper cervical spine? What if my main complaint is knee pain?

Your body’s balance, homeostasis, and proper biomechanical function is directly impacted by the upper cervical spine. Not only does the upper cervical spine protect and allow for optimal nervous system function, but the top two bones are the most movable bones in the spine. When they are not aligned or aren't moving properly the spinal bones below them have to compensate for this. This spinal compensation can cause skeletal and muscular imbalance and this can lead to overuse of joints, upper back pain, hip pain, or hamstring strain to name a few. Knee pain could be caused by excess weight being applied to this joint, improper healing of the knee, or muscle strain in this area all of which can be a result of upper cervical dysfunction. When necessary, after restoring optimal function to the upper cervical spine, the doctor will adjust the extremities to improve joint function and speed up healing.

At what age should I have my child’s nervous system health check by Dr. Andrea?

At any age it is appropriate to have your child checked. Dr. Andrea sees newborns through adolescence. Often the primary cause of an upper cervical misalignment and nervous system interference is birth trauma and/or childhood falls. If this misalignment is caught and corrected early, you give your child the potential for optimal physical and physiological function, growth, prevention of many childhood complaints, and the improvement of their current condition. Having your child checked by Dr. Andrea does not mean they will be adjusted. If everything is as it should be than there is no need to make an upper cervical correction. But wouldn’t you want to know that your child is on track and at their best! If your child does require an upper cervical adjustment the good news is children respond very well to upper cervical care and they typically do not require the frequency or number of adjustments that adults do.

Is having your nervous system check safe?

Yes. Computed Infrared thermography is a technology that gathers information and does not put anything into the body. Infant to the elderly can safely have their nervous system checked as often as necessary.

What can I expect during a typical office visit?

At each visit your nervous system function will be checked using computed infrared thermography and other necessary physical assessments will be performed. If it is determined that you need an upper cervical adjustment one will be made and then you will rest in the Zero Gravity chairs for a period of time (typically 20 minutes). This resting period allows your body to integrate the adjustment and make any internal changes need. This helps patients to progress quicker in care and makes it so they do not require as many adjustments as would be needed without this resting/rebooting time. After you rest your nervous system will be recheck for optimal function so you and the doctor know you had an appropriate adjustment that was integrated by your body for the best results. If after your nervous system assessment it is determined that you do not need an upper cervical adjustment than your visit is complete. Additional therapies may be performed at your visit if you do not need an upper cervical adjustment and in some cases if you did. These therapies may include massage, trigger point therapy, ultrasound, neuromuscular reeducation, nutritional exams, or physical/rehabilitation therapy. All additional therapies are intended to support your upper cervical adjustment and aid in your body’s healing.

What is the goal of upper cervical chiropractic care?

Your body was designed to heal itself and can do so more effectively with proper nervous system function and upper cervical alignment. Dr. Andrea would love to give you one upper cervical adjustment and never have to do it again! (This can be the case for young children who often only need one adjustment and hold their upper cervical correction for years.) Unfortunately most people who first come to our office have needed and upper cervical adjustment for a very long time and their body has adapted to this dysfunction. Transformation Chiropractic & Wellness Center's goal is to help your body get to a place where you don’t need to keep getting adjusted. Dr. Andrea refer to this as holding your correction. Eventually the amount of time between adjustments lengthens until some patients only need to come and get checked every 3-6 months. Your wellbeing outside of your office is our number one goal. We don’t want you to need to see us because your nervous system isn’t functioning optimally. We would rather see you for the little hiccups on your journey of lifelong wellbeing.

How often will I have to come?

A critical component of care is not only the upper cervical adjustment itself, but your body’s ability to hold the adjustment over time. This requires more frequent visits at the beginning of care, like the first time you learn to do anything, repetition is key. Your body needs to make soft tissue and ligamentous changes to allow it to hold your adjustment for as long as possible. Then we reduce the frequency of your visits as you begin holding your correction on a consistent basis. The goal is for your body to hold the upper cervical correction for at least 3-6 months allowing your body to function optimally for as long as possible. This allows you to heal and see substation health benefits. This is similar to seeing your dentist every six months, you get checked for cavities but only get them filled if necessary. The same is true with upper cervical care. You want to be adjusted when you need it but not if you don’t.

Is the upper cervical adjustment safe?

Absolutely. If it wasn’t Dr. Andrea wouldn’t do it. During the adjustment your head, neck, and spine are in a neutral position. And the adjustment is given to the exact bone that needs to be corrected, in the exact angle it needs to move for correct biomechanics in that joint. There is no twisting, torqueing, or popping of the neck. Often patients are surprised at how quick and easy it is. Dr. Andrea always makes any modifications necessary for age, body size, physical restriction, and your comfort so you have an effective and positive adjustment.
